What started as a low-key mental health recovery programme has turned into a major musical opportunity for South
Auckland singing group, Musical Healers.
The group, part of a pre-vocational programme launched by Baptist Action’s Te Korowai Aroha (formerly Baptist Mental
Health), will be releasing its first CD "Moon Reflections" in the New Year.
Also in the pipeline next year, says the group’s facilitator, Cathy Reti, are radio and television appearances and a
tour of mental health facilities throughout the country.
Singer/songwriter Cathy, who featured as a backup singer with Kiri Te Kanawa on Television One’s Rugby World Cup promo,
says the musical programme is designed to help mental health clients realise their creative potential.
They write most of the group’s material, often expressing their life stories in music.
They’ve already had successful ‘gigs’ in several venues around Auckland and will make pre-Christmas appearances in
major shopping malls.
"The project requires high levels of motivation and commitment," says Cathy, "and the group has shown a dedication to
learning and up-skilling."
A total of 15 people are currently enrolled with Te Korowai Aroha’s pre-vocational programme in South Auckland. Further
