War Crimes Must Be Tried

Published: Tue 14 Sep 1999 11:46 AM
Leaders of the East Timorese community and eminent Australian jurists
continue to press for the perpetrators of the terrible abuses of human
rights in East Timor to be brought before an international war crimes
tribunal, under the auspices of the United Nations.
To that end, the East Timor War Crimes Committee has been formed. It is
an association of East Timorese and Australians committed to bringing
those responsible for the atrocities in East Timor to justice. It is
intended that the committee concentrate on providing financial and
logistical support to those gathering information for presentation to
the appropriate international authorities.
It is intended that the Committee will regularly inform the Indonesian
government and military of the nature of the evidence gathered against
them as a means of persuading them to stop their abuses.
