3) WHAT'S ON - AUCKLAND - EAST TIMOR PROTESTS THIS WEEK
APEC Protests planned - no leadership from Shipley and McKinnon so the people must act to prevent renewed East Timor
genocide.
The East Timor Independence Committee has planned demonstrations to take the message to Indonesia's Foreign Minister,
Ali Alatas and to President Habibie.
* The first takes place on Wednesday 8 September at 12 noon and will take the form of a march down Queen St from
the Trade Aid shop (177 Karangahape Rd.) The focus will be on the presence in Auckland of Ali Alatas, Indonesia's
Foreign Minister.
* The second takes place on Saturday September 11 at 8 p.m - gathering point at the Ferry Terminal, downtown
Auckland.
Aucklanders Outraged At Hosting Those Responsible For Timor Massacres
"Aucklanders are enraged that we are about to host the very people who are responsible for the massacres in East Timor
and for the onset of one of the darkest times in East Timor's tragic history. I am fielding constant telephone calls
from people who want to show their concern for the people of East Timor and their anger at the Government's lack of
resolute action."
"It is outrageous that these killers will be wined and dined at our expense while the people of East Timor are fleeing
the rampaging militia thugs and dying in their hundreds. For the Minister of Foreign Affairs to state that the subject
of East Timor will be discussed only on the margins of the APEC Conference is nothing but an obscenity. Do the people of
East Timor count for so little in his eyes?"
"We will continue to call on our Government to take a leadership role in these dark days and to ensure that the United
Nations lives up to its charter and sends in an armed peacekeeping force - not in 3 months, not in 3 days but now,
before more people are slaughtered."
"We also demand that our Government severe all military training ties to Indonesia and immediately send home the
military personnel who are studying here now."
