UNAMET PRESS RELEASE - 2 SEPTEMBER 1999
The independent Electoral Commission began its hearing this morning into complaints received from the United Front for
East Timor Autonomy concerning alleged irregularities in the popular consultation.
The United Front was invited to attend the hearing and to bring any witnesses to the alleged irregularities it wished.
Representatives from the official Indonesian and Portuguese observer delegations were also invited to attend.
The Chief Electoral Officer of UNAMET has been requested by the Commission to investigate and respond to each of the
alleged irregularities raised by the United Front in their letter on this matter to the Special Representative of the
Secretary General.
The Commissioners have stated that they are determined to investigate as thoroughly as possible every material
allegation, and that they intend to hold the hearing throughout today and tomorrow.
The hearing is open to the public and the media, although cameras are not permitted on the instructions of the
Commissioners.
