Paul-Newman-Foundation Charity Begins At Home In Hollywood!
Far from your average movie star, Hollywood legend Paul Newman is giving away more than $40,000 to NZ charities!
Paul Newman, well known for his movie career also dabbles in the gourmet food business. His range of pasta sauces and
salad dressings under the "Paul Newman's Own" label are a foodies delight.
Not content with this, all of the after-tax profits from the Paul Newman's Own range is donated to charities around the
world. Worldwide, the Foundation has donated over NZ$150 million, including $5.5million to over 250 charities in
Australia and New Zealand.
This year, the Paul Newman Foundation has over $40,000 available for New Zealand charities. A pool of $40,000 is
available to be shared amongst some of New Zealand's smaller, lesser-known charities whose work contributes to the
welfare of many New Zealanders. A selected number of charities can expect to receive from $2,500 to $10,000 each.
The Foundation is seeking to help registered charities that have a community focus; receive minimal government funding;
and whose funds are spent within New Zealand. The funds should be spent on a particular project and cannot be used to
fund salaries or administration costs.
To request an application form, charity representatives should call the Paul Newman Foundation freephone number on 0508
CHARITY or 0508 242 748. Applications for this year's funding round close on 3 September 1999.
Charities who are successful in being awarded grants will be notified by the end of October 1999. A visiting
representative from the Paul Newman Foundation, Ursula Hotchener will visit New Zealand to present the monies to these
charities personally.
Paul Newman's Own products have been available since 1982. Despite Paul Newman's busy career, he remains closely
involved with the running of his food business, in particular the development of new products. The first Newman product
was his Classic Salad Dressing that he and long time friend A.E. Hotchener would mix up in Newman's basement and give
away to friends as Christmas presents.
"When we started this all, everyone said it was a joke, and I said it was a joke," said Newman about the founding of
Newman's Own. "And 18 years later, we've given away $150 million to charity, and I think that's pretty funny!"
This year, members of the public will have the chance to assist their favourite charity in receiving funds from the
Paul Newman's Own pool, and be in to win some great prizes also. A further $10,000 is available for a charity to receive
via a competition run through the NZ Woman's Day.
Pick up a copy of the 20 September issue of the NZ Woman's Day for details.
After 11 years in this country, Newman's distinctive, high quality food products have achieved a permanent place on New
Zealand supermarket shelves. The current range of products in New Zealand now includes six varieties of pasta sauce and
five varieties of salad dressing.
The Paul Newman's Own range of pasta sauces and salad dressings are available at all supermarkets throughout New
Zealand.
