Media are asked to restrain from publishing details which could lead to the identification of two Korean girls, the
Children, Young Persons and Their Families Agency (CYPFA) says.
"CYPFA accepts the case involving the girls is an entirely legitimate one for media to cover. However, some of the case
details published by The New Zealand Herald today could lead to the girls being publicly identified. These details were
the name of a businessman and his restaurant.
"Given the background to the case, publishing such details again could have the unintended consequence of the girls
suffering even more through their public identification," says chief social worker Mike Doolan.
"CYPFA is working with other agencies to look at better ways of protecting foreign students studying in New Zealand.
This case highlights the importance of establishing clear protocols for handling cases when things go wrong."
The younger of the two girls has been re-united with family in Korea while the second remains in CYPFA care as options
for her future are examined.
