Cypfa Says: 'Stop The Violence - For The Children's Sake'
Stop violence in New Zealand homes for the sake of our kids, says the Children, Young Persons & Their Families Agency (CYPFA).
The Agency is the principal sponsor of the Children and Family Violence: Effective Interventions Now conference which
begins in Wellington this Sunday (July 4).
"Family violence can cause enormous physical and emotional harm to children," says CYPFA's policy group manager Brenda
Pilott, who will chair a session looking at the impact of violence on children.
"CYPFA social workers deal with the sharp end of such family violence as they investigate thousands of cases of child
abuse and neglect every year.
"We also work with young offenders who may be carrying on a cycle of violence they've learned at home.
"Many of our interventions work successfully. But all of us - the state, voluntary agencies, communities and individual
families - need to develop even better ways of helping to stop family violence," says Ms Pilott.
"This conference, organised by The Family Violence Taskforce, provides an important forum for sharing ideas and looking
for new solutions."
CYPFA is the primary funder of community organisations working with women and children affected by family violence, says
Ms Pilott.
"The Agency has also been funding six pilot initiatives for two years which are designed to assist child victims and
witnesses of family violence - these are a first for New Zealand and are being evaluated to assess the outcomes."
