Working Together to Find a Cure
Breast Cancer Summit, Friday, 13 October, Crowne Plaza, Auckland
Breast Cancer Cure, the only charity devoted to finding a cure for breast cancer, is hosting a Summit on the 13th
October, in association with the University of Auckland, and the New Zealand Society of Oncology.
Since its establishment, Breast Cancer Cure has funded many significant research projects in New Zealand, totalling
close to $10 million in grants due to the lack of government funding directly into breast cancer. 83% of women diagnosed
are now surviving five years, but there is still no cure for the other 30% of women who go on to develop advanced breast
cancer after five years.
The Breast Cancer Summit will provide a unique opportunity for those working in the breast cancer field with the main
objective being to chart a vision for the next 10 years. Clinicians, scientists and consumers will collaborate and
discuss future research, direction, policies, and priorities for treatments in New Zealand.
The Summit will host four influential international speakers including:
• Professor Stephen Fox of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Australia
• Professor Georgia Chenevix-Trench of the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Australia
• Professor Adrian Harris of University of Oxford, UK
• Dr Shom Goel of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School Boston, USA
These international experts will be speaking alongside 21 world leading New Zealand researchers and scientists to
determine the direction and drive for future research.
Breast Cancer Cure’s Fay Sowerby comments, “It’s research that will ultimately find a cure for breast cancer. New
Zealand has the 7th highest incidence of breast cancer in the world and this Summit will have a strong focus on
improving survival and optimising outcomes for women in New Zealand, inevitably improving this statistic.”
