CCDHB helps kids get energized
Eating right and getting active is the name of the game at Rangikura School in Porirua, which has today become the latest school to enrol in Capital & Coast DHB’s new initiative to combat childhood obesity – Project Energize.
“We’re very excited to be working with the Heart Foundation to deliver a healthy eating and exercise programme that we know works,” said Service Integration Development Unit Acting Director Sandra Williams.
“Project Energize will help reduce obesity rates among children in the Wellington region. It will teach kids how to be healthy through exercise and good eating, and give schools practical support to implement health and fitness programmes.”
CCDHB aims to have 30 Wellington region schools enrolled by 2019. Nine have enrolled so far – the latest being Rangikura School.
“The students of Rangikura are very lucky to be able to take part in initiatives like Project Energize,” said Rangikura School principal Eddie Uluilelata.
“The project boosts the programmes that schools are already doing themselves. Our students are learning to use these behaviours every day, and building good healthy habits for life.”
Project Energize has run for 10 years in the Waikato – resulting in a 78 percent improvement in fitness levels and childhood obesity rates that are significantly lower than the national average.
“We know from Waikato that kids, parents and teachers love this programme,” Sandra said.
“Project Energize is all about getting children up and moving, enjoying being active and eating right, and we know it will make a difference in the health and wellbeing of our young people.”
