Canterbury Clinical Network wins 2015 Deloitte Fujitsu Public Sector Excellence Awards

The Canterbury Clinical Network, nominated by the Canterbury District Health Board, won the Prime Minister's Award at the 2015 Deloitte Fujitsu Public Sector Excellence Awards held in Wellington last night.

The Canterbury Clinical Network is an alliance of healthcare providers which has redesigned the way it delivers health services. Cantabrians are increasingly accessing health care in the community and being supported in their own homes. As a result there is reduced pressure on hospitals, shorter waits for care and higher rates of elective services.

Last year alone, 30,000 people who would previously have been admitted to hospital with acute conditions received their treatment and care in their homes. Christchurch Hospital has an age adjusted acute medical admission rate 30% lower than the national average.

“This is a great example of collaboration and integration of services,” said Institute of Public Administration NZ (IPANZ) President John Larkindale. “The Network has transformed the way health services operate in Canterbury with astonishing results.”

The programme also won the Excellence Award for Improving Public Value through Business Transformation. Canterbury District Health Board was also successful in other categories, winning the Public Sector Engagement Award for its ‘Heading to Hospital – Plan your Trip!’ campaign; and as a joint winner of the Leadership Excellence Award.

Organised by IPANZ, with support from lead sponsors Deloitte and Fujitsu, the annual Public Sector Excellence Awards recognise and reward outstanding performances and achievements in the New Zealand public sector. This year the awards attracted 75 entries from a large range of organisations including government departments, district health boards, Crown agencies, local government and tertiary education organisations.
