International Student Counselling Centre achieving impressive outcomes
The International Student Counselling Centre (ISCC), launched just 3 months ago, is already showing some impressive client outcomes, says Steve Taylor, Head of Faculty for the Diploma in Counselling & Family Therapy at the National Tertiary Education Consortium (NTEC).
Devised as a “live site” counselling training centre and free pastoral support network for Auckland international students, the ISCC now sees over 100 clients a month, and uses the Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS) to track each client’s progress through therapy.
“Students use the Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) tool to measure how a client is progressing from session to session, and the Session Rating Scale (SRS) tool to measure the strength of the therapeutic alliance between Counsellor and client.
To date, the SRS scores that our Counsellors are achieving is averaging out at a score of 37 / 40, which is an incredible achievement, considering that these scores are client-generated” says Mr Taylor.
“Clients are also returning for subsequent appointments off their own bat, which in an international student counselling setting, is quite remarkable to witness, as "asking for help” in a number of cultures is considered taboo – that fact that such an environmental cultural change is occurring so quickly is further evidence of the outstanding work our student counsellors are doing” said Mr Taylor.
International students residing in Auckland are welcome to contact the ISCC at counselling@ntec.ac.nz
