Health careers programme starts in Dunedin
Twenty four Queens High School students will have the opportunity to view health professionals in their workplace and to
experience a health agency work environment on Friday.
The students are participating in Southern DHB’s Programme Incubator, a coordinated programme providing in-depth
information on health to secondary pupils.
“This is the launch of the programme in Otago which introduces health careers and health professional role models to
secondary school students from years 11-13,” said Programme Incubator Otago Coordinator Vicie Hodge.
“On Friday, the students will be introduced to the DHB and will attend sessions with Maori Health, Public Health and the
Oral Health teams giving them an introduction to different career choices in the health sector in an interesting, and
engaging way,” explained Vicie.
“The students and a teacher will be introduced to the departments in the hospital where a mentor will show them around
and share their career pathway story, and they will also attend sessions held at school,” she said.
Programme Incubator is based on a strategy of ‘grow your own’ for future workforce health careers.
“Without funding this programme would not be successful. We would like to give a big thank for the generosity of Otago
Healthcare Trust which have made this new programme possible,” said Ms Hodge.
