Problem Gambling Foundation farewells a mana wahine Maureen Waaka
Moe mai ra e te rangatira.
Today we send a champion of the problem gambling kaupapa on her final journey.
Kei te tangi te ngakau ma koutou o the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand.
The staff, Board and CEO of the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand are greatly saddened by the passing of Maureen Waaka, of Te Arawa/Ngati Whakaue and Tuwharetoa/ Ngati Turumakina.
Graeme Ramsey, Chief Executive of the Problem Gambling Foundation, says Maureen's legacy will live on.
"She was instrumental in the establishment of Whanau Tupono, a standing committee of the PGF Board whose responsibility is the development, implementation and oversight of cultural competencies for the organisation," he says.
Maureen was a founding member of the PGF Board who has championed our cause with strength and determination for over 14 years. She was Deputy Chair of the PGF Board and Chair of the Whanau Tupono Committee, PGF's cultural and ethnic committee.
Maureen had a strong sense of social justice which underpinned her work on the Board and her passion, drive and commitment to our kaupapa.
She was a true ambassador for PGF who spoke up for what she believed in with great courage. Her presence at the Board table and as part of the PGF whanau will be greatly missed.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Maureen's family.
