Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Ironically, during World Smokefree Day celebrations at Three Rivers Medical on Friday [31 May] there could be a lot of
smoke – but from a barbecue, not the dangerous waft of cigarette smoke!
Turanga Health and Three Rivers staff will be sizzling steak in a ‘Cook Off’ on 31 May promoting healthy eating; but as
well as that, they are celebrating World Smokefree Day.
“It’s a double-header for health promotion,” says Turanga Health event coordinator Dallas Poi.
“We wanted to find a way to promote how easy it is to prepare delicious healthy food and so we are hosting a very public
Cook Off in front of the medical centre, 11am to 2pm.”
Chefs from Turanga Health and Three Rivers Medical staff will each have 20 minutes to create a marinade, rub or dipping
sauce, then cook their steak. Participants can prepare their marinades earlier at home if they want.
Just like this month’s rural Cook Off at Waikohu Health Centre, Ms Poi says onlookers are encouraged to sample the
culinary delights, and be in to win a wok and utensils by answering a simple questionnaire.
To acknowledge World Smokefree Day Turanga Health smoking cessation staff will use the event to check onlookers’ smoking
status, and offer help or a quit smoking programme to anyone interested.
Our staff offer anyone the opportunity to stop smoking through a range of activities and products which include free
nicotine patches, gum and lozenges (Nicotine Replacement Therapy), motivational counselling and ongoing support, said Ms
Poi.
