Response to UK reports regarding Seroquel XL strips in packs of Nurofen Plus
26 August 2011: The makers of Nurofen Plus are aware of reports in the UK that strips of the prescription-only atypical antipsychotic medication, Seroquel XL 50 mg prolonged release tablets, have been found in three packets of Nurofen Plus in the UK.
The cases are in the UK only. There has been no product recalls and there is no reason to believe Nurofen Plus in New Zealand is affected.
We can confirm that none of these identified packs of Nurofen Plus have been distributed in New Zealand. Furthermore, New Zealand do not share any Nurofen Plus packs with the UK.
It appears that in the three packets concerned all the standard blister strips of Nurofen Plus tablets have been removed and replaced with foil sealed blister strips of Seroquel XL. The strips are clearly labelled as Seroquel XL.
Nurofen Plus and Seroquel XL are not manufactured or packaged by the same company, or in the same factory and therefore serious investigations are currently underway to establish the source of the problem in the UK. After careful review of the manufacturing system, manufacturing errors by the makers of Nurofen Plus or Seroquel XL are not thought to be part of the cause at this stage.
Dr Phil Berry, Global Medical Director for Nurofen Plus says “We are taking this matter extremely seriously and we are working to investigate fully. We have no reason to believe Nurofen Plus in any other country is affected.”
Seroquel XL (quetiapine prolonged release) is a prescription only atypical antipsychotic medication indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia, acute manic and depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder as well as major depressive episodes.
