Students’ Painting Pride on Display at Waikato Hospital
Some of the Waikato’s best student artwork is now on display at Waikato Hospital and it’s already stopping traffic.
The paintings were done by Waikato secondary school students as part of the Transfusion Painting Competition and
featured in a Waikato Museum exhibition in July.
It is now providing viewing pleasure for patients, visitors and staff alike, on display opposite the Waikato Hospital
shop.
“Already the paintings are attracting a lot of positive attention from patients and visitors and they’ve only been up
for one day,” said Waikato District Health Board communications director, and competition sponsor Mary Anne Gill.
“It’s a great thing that the students do, gifting their artwork to Waikato Hospital. It brightens up the hospital walls
and brings smiles to the faces of the people who visit here.”
Twenty-three pieces are on show in the link corridor at Waikato Hospital (area between the car park building and level
one of the hospital), including the 2009 and 2010 winning pieces by Hillcrest High School’s Julia King and Hamish Carter
from Hamilton Boys’ High School.
Hamilton Boys’ High School established the competition in 2004 and decided with then Waikato DHB non-clinical services
manager Brenda Peters, that the artwork would be donated to Waikato Hospital.
“By donating artwork to the hospital, young artists can be assured of public appreciation of their work,” said HBHS head
of art James Sutherland.
“For everybody involved, it is a great way to give something positive, tangible and lasting to the community and we can
feel a great sense of pride when walking through the corridors of the hospital and seeing our art displayed.”
