Cartwright Comes of Age? One Day Seminar
The Cartwright Inquiry signaled a major sea change in the way health care is delivered in New Zealand. Twenty-one years after its release, the health system is under scrutiny again and it’s time to look at whether the basic challenges to the system initiated by Cartwright remain relevant.
After Cartwright, the idea that you could trust doctors because they knew what they were doing became open to question. We saw the setting up of the Health and Disability Commissioner office to promote and protect patient rights; the establishment of ethics committees to protect people who are part of medical and clinical research; moves towards patient centred health care and the setting up of nationwide screening programmes for breast and cervical cancer screening. All these areas will be up for discussion and debate at Women’s Health Action’s seminar which marks the 21st anniversary of the release of the report: Cartwright Comes of Age?
Setting the scene and providing their perspectives and challenges in the morning session are:
• Current Health and Disability Commissioner, Ron Paterson
• Professor of Sociology at Victoria University, Kevin Dew
• Assistant Privacy Commissioner, Katrine Evans
• Sandra Coney, Co-author of the Metro article and subsequent book `The Unfortunate Experiment’.
The afternoon workshops lead out with prominent informed leaders in the field giving a quickfire overview and identifying key areas to be addressed in each of the following areas - the Health and Disability Commissioner; ethics committee’s; patient centred health care and screening programmes.
The panel at the end of the day will draw together the themes and issues to create ideas for creating a platform of action which puts patients and consumers to the forefront of health. This will be a thought provoking, challenging, informative and entertaining day seminar.
