New book demystifies diabetes for Kiwi kids
Just published “Denby the Dog with Diabetes” is written by Frances Rabone – a Wellington author and health counsellor.
The book is targeted at children who are newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It traces the symptoms, diagnosis and
management of diabetes in simple terms. It also aims to demystify the experience of diabetes for children, their
siblings and other family members.
New Zealand’s Diabetes Awareness Week is from 18 – 24 November.
The story begins with Denby the dog feeling unwell and going to the vet. A blood test confirms that he has diabetes. He
is introduced to insulin injections, changes to his diet and the need for regular exercise. At the end of the book Denby
is back to his healthy bouncy self. The vet declares: “Wow Denby I’m so impressed your sugar control is just the best”
and he becomes the leader of the pack.
Frances Rabone says: “I wanted the book to be a fun way of helping children come to terms with Type 1 diabetes. Children
and families can initially feel overwhelmed with new terminology and the changes that occur following diagnosis. Given
that dogs also get diabetes I hope that children will be reassured that they are ‘not the only one’ and that with
careful management they can live full and active lives.”
The book is illustrated by Ann Davenport of Auckland. The authenticity of the text has been endorsed by medical
professionals working in the field of diabetes.
“Denby the Dog with Diabetes” is being distributed by its sponsor Eli Lilly and Company (NZ) to medical and diabetic
centres throughout New Zealand.
