“Excellent Decision On Senior Doctors’ Commission Into Competitive Terms And Conditions Of Employment”
"Director-General of Health Stephen McKernan has made an excellent decision in his selection of the three members of the independent commission into competitive terms and conditions of employment for senior doctors employed by DHBs," said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.
"The choice of a former government statistician and current head of the Medical Training Board to chair it along with a respected former DHB chief executive and also respected former President of the Council of Trade Unions provides an impressive mix of balance, expertise and experience. All three are known to be people with open minds, integrity and intellectual rigour."
"The decision to establish the commission recognises that New Zealand needs to provide competitive terms and conditions of employment if we are going to be able to recruit and retain the quality senior doctors that patients and the public need. The commission’s task is to recommend what these terms and conditions should be,” concluded Mr Powell.
