RED AWARENESS WEEK
6-10 October 2008
Red Awareness Week will be running from the 6th to the 10th of October 2008. Based on similar endeavors in Australia and
abroad, Red Awareness Week is about raising awareness for one the most serious heath issues in the modern age, HIV/AIDS.
Red Awareness Week aims to:
1. To fundraise for Medical Students for Global Awareness, with funds going
to Oxfam’s Water for Survival charity project run by Oxfam in Papua New Guinea.
2. To raise awareness of MSGA and its long term goals of creating a new generation of globally aware health
practitioners.
3. To provide information and insight into the issue of HIV/AIDS in the Asia/Pacific region, so that as medical students
we can think global and act local.
All proceeds raised during the week and the Red Party will go towards the New Zealand AIDS Foundation and Oxfam Water for Survival project in Papua New Guinea run by Oxfam NZ.
This project aims to install critical clean water supplies in areas heavily hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In doing so, Oxfam aims to ensure safe, clean local drinking water for villages who have gone without this most basic of needs.
During the week, we have numerous exciting fundraising events planned:
Monday October 6th ‘Paint the Town Red’ Day: mainly a fundraising event, a day where we hope to get everyone to dress in red and deck the Faculty of Medical
Health Sciences buildings at the University of Auckland out in red.
Tuesday October 7th A Movie Night: featuring "A Closer Walk," a hard-hitting film about living with HIV/AIDS, to provoke thought and debate regarding this issue.
Wednesday October 8th HIV/AIDS Awareness Forum: presentations by health practitioners who are experienced in the
area, as well as people living with HIV/AIDS and the organisations we are donating to. We'd like to include a question
and answer session to give medical students a chance to interact with the guests.
Friday October 10th Red Party: a red-themed party with a conscience, to finish the week with a bang! Featuring the
hottest of Aotearoa’s DJ stars, DJ Ravi!

Medical Students for Global Awareness, is an organization of students helping create a new generation of practitioners
who are well informed and motivated to increase awareness, advocate and bring about meaningful change. We are part of a
national body under the parent organisation International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), a Nobel
