Wellington Free Ambulance parade tomorrow
An emergency services motorcade will snake through central Wellington on Friday afternoon marking the peak of Wellington Free Ambulance's week-long street appeal.
Since Tuesday volunteers from around the region have been collecting donations from the public for the region's free emergency ambulance service.
The street appeal is a vital source of funding for Wellington Free Ambulance, said fundraising manager James Craw.
"Every year our appeals raise about $400,000, which goes towards keeping emergency ambulance services free for all Wellingtonians - whether you live in Karori or the Kapiti Coast."
Mr Craw said the service has been generously supported by the public in the past and the parade at lunchtime on Friday was one way WFA could show its appreciation.
"The parade is a long-standing tradition and we are very grateful to be able to do this, as Wellington Free Ambulance is the only charity permitted to parade through the CBD."
The parade will feature up to 20 vehicles from Police, the Fire Service, Life Flight and Wellington Free Ambulance.
Volunteers will continue to collect for the ambulance service throughout the parade.
"The continued support of the people of Wellington is incredibly important to Wellington Free Ambulance. Get down to central Wellington at lunchtime on Friday so we can say thanks," he said.
The street appeal may end this weekend but Wellington Free Ambulance's fundraising efforts go on. On October 21 the Ride of Your Life auction site on Trade Me will start offering the public a variety of unusual and practical rides they can bid on, such as a ride to work in an army vehicle.
Guy Fawkes Night will see the Wellington waterfront become the backdrop for a series of spectacular rides including Thundercats on the harbour and the Red Checkers aerial display team in the air.
The Ride of Your Life culminates in a gala dinner at the Duxton where more exciting rides are up for grabs.
More information on these fundraising events can be found at www.rideofyourlife.co.nz.
The street appeal parade starts at 12.30pm at the Beehive end of Lambton Quay. It will go along Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Mercer Street, Wakefield Street, Cuba Street and Manners Street to Courtenay Place and finish outside the Embassy Theatre.
