Canterbury DHB Names New CEO
Canterbury District Health Board is pleased to announce that David Meates, the current Chief Executive of Wairarapa DHB,
will be its next Chief Executive.
Gordon Davies, who has been CDHB’s CEO for the last three years, will retire in mid November and Mr Meates will take up
the position on Monday 2 February 2009.
CDHB’s Executive Director of Nursing Mary Gordon will be acting CEO in the interim.
Mr Meates, who grew up in Canterbury and attended Canterbury and Lincoln Universities, is chair of the DHBs’ National
CEO Group and has carried a wide range of national responsibilities including leadership of a number of recent workforce
negotiations covering both senior and junior doctors.
His previous roles include Manager of Grey Base Hospital and senior health positions in Hawkes Bay and Northland.
CDHB Chair Alister James says the Board is “delighted that it has been able to appoint a person of David’s calibre and
experience."
“He has an impressive record as CEO of the Wairarapa DHB and in his previous roles in health. Although David is coming
from a smaller DHB, he has a very wide knowledge of health in New Zealand and has been a highly effective chair of the
National CEO Group."
Among those involved in the selection of the new CEO was a group of CDHB’s clinical leaders, who Mr James said voted
overwhelmingly in favour of his appointment.
