Second Chance At Hawaii Ironman For Waikato Nurse Educator
In 1988, nineteen year old, Sarah Walker was not only the youngest competitor but was the fourth female to cross the
finish line at the Cape Cod Ironman in USA - a result that earned her an automatic qualification for the famous Kona
World Ironman Championship held in Hawaii each year. But for one reason or another, she decided not to go.
Fast forward 20 years to January 2008. Sarah was turning 40 and asked herself: why not do it again? She decided to
enter the Taupo Ironman in the women's 40-44 years age group, and finished as the second woman home (out of 47) in her
age group. That earned her an entry to the Kona World Ironman Championships in Hawaii on 11 October.
Sarah is a nurse educator in Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital.
In the 10 or so weeks leading up to the classic Ironman event her blog gives readers an insight into training for such
an extreme event, but also helps advice anyone who wants to get a little bit fitter and healthier - such as how to keep
motivated when it's cold and wet, good food options, negotiating schedules with your family, setting realistic goals.

The Apprentice of the Year competition is being run in 10 regions this year: Northern, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty,
East Coast, Central North Island, Wellington, Upper South Island, Central South Island and Southern.
The winner of each regional competition and up to three guests will be brought to Wellington in October to take part in
the national competition. The winner of the national Apprentice of the Year title will be announced at an awards evening
following national judging.
Regional winners also receive a prize package which includes:
* Participation in a specialist Outward Bound Leadership Programme tailored for Apprentice of the Year winners
(value up to $2500) * A scholarship towards completion of study or postgraduate study in any construction or
building course (value up to $2000)
Regional place-getters receive:

All entrants in the Apprentice of the Year competition also receive an apprenticeship membership to the Registered
