Today, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, is marked by the 45,000 nurses in New Zealand and by all nurses internationally as International Nurses’ Day. Nurse educators and nursing students celebrate the day with a large cake (pictured is Post Graduate Nursing Programme Manager Kerri Arcus cutting the cake).
“This day is about the social contract nurses have with the public, its about our commitment to professional health care for all. Like all birthdays, it marks the past and looks to the future says Arcus.
New Zealand has a unique link to Nightingale, she wrote the Report on Native Health’ for Governor Grey, from her sick bed in England. She pioneered statistical analysis and polar pie chart analysis in the development of health policy and practice”.
Whitireia Polytechnic staff joined in a large morning tea for all nurses and nursing students and teachers. The morning tea was followed by free blood pressure tests at the Porirua campus.
