Reminder About the Risks of Toxic Honey
The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) today reminded people to continue to be careful about eating comb honey purchased from the Coromandel Peninsula since early January this year. Consumers should check with the supplier that the harvested comb honey has met all food safety requirements. If in any doubt about comb honey, NZFSA recommends that people do not eat it.
NZFSA is also advising people that if they feel they might have suffered an illness associated with honey, to contact the Waikato District Health Board's helpline on 0800 276216 for information and advice.
Both brands of comb honey produced by Projen Apiaries' are : Wentworth Valley and Moana Point, as pictured below (see contact details).
Consumers who may have already eaten these products or disposed of them in some way are also asked to contact the 0800 helpline with details.
Three outlets in Whangamata sold the honey : Quarry Orchard, Valley Orchards and Meat at the Beach.
The number of suspected cases is now 17.
