Blue and Red T-Shirts Expected to Dominate Surf to City Crowds
Southlanders can expect to see a wave of blue and red t-shirts moving their way through the Surf to City crowd this
Sunday 10 February, with close to 400 staff from Southland District Health Board (SDHB) and Tiwai Point's New Zealand
Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) signed up to participate in the event.
Lexie O'Shea, SDHB's Interim Deputy CEO, said that to date, 181 staff were registered as part of the DHB team, bringing
with them a further 139 family members to get involved in the Healthy Eating Healthy Action (HEHA) event.
"The community can certainly expect to see a large group of SDHB staff at the Surf to City, all wearing vibrant blue DHB
team t-shirts to promote the HEHA message," Mrs O'Shea said.
Paul Hemburrow, NZAS General Manager said that 214 smelter staff had signed up so far, well exceeding their
expectations.
"This is the first year that NZAS has participated in the Surf to City and we are absolutely thrilled at the response,
with over 200 staff signed up to wear their red team t-shirts on the day."
Mrs O'Shea said that the Smelter looked on track to win the challenge they had issued to SDHB, to see who could get the
largest number of staff participating in the event.
"The goal was to get as many staff as possible out there getting active, and I think we've both been successful in that
endeavour with a good turn out expected. We've been impressed by the Smelter's numbers for their first time entering and
congratulate them for embracing the HEHA message," Mrs O'Shea said.
"It's been a good fun challenge and we're looking forward to walking, biking or running alongside the DHB staff and
wider community this Sunday," Mr Hemburrow said.
The Surf to City takes place this Sunday 10 February and is a fun participation event where people can either walk, run
or bike the 11.5km from Oreti Beach to Queens Park.
