HBDHB calling for tenders from other hospitals to provide some elective services
Following public consultation, Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (HBDHB) has decided to go ahead with plans to access
additional funding for elective services, by calling for tenders from hospitals and health providers located within four
hours drive of Hastings.
Acting chief executive officer, Dr Win Bennett said HBDHB had an opportunity to access additional funding, and wanted to
ensure as many Hawke’s Bay people as possible will have access to elective surgery, procedures and appointments with
specialist doctors.
“Hawke’s Bay Hospital is operating at capacity and simply doesn’t have the facilities or resources to provide all the
additional elective services for which we can access funding for,” Dr Bennett said.

Tenders close at 8:00am on Monday 11 February 2008.
The elective services being tendered include some general surgery, ear nose and throat surgery, orthopaedics, urology,
gynaecology and colonoscopies.
In addition to the open tender process, the DHB’s Audit & Finance committee (delegated by the Board) resolved at a special meeting in December, to enter negotiations with
Wakefield Health, who operate Royston Hospital, to provide some additional elective services. Board chair Kevin Atkinson
said it made sense for the DHB to secure some additional elective services locally.
It is likely the additional elective services (specialist assessments, surgery and procedures and post-operative check
ups) will be offered to people on the waiting lists towards the end of February.
