Breast Cancer Network NZ Inc Media Release August 16th 2006
Breast Cancer Network NZ Inc launches petition to get the incidence of breast cancer in NZ down.
The unpalatable fact that we would rather not face, is that 50 New Zealand women are diagnosed with breast cancer every
week. The incidence of breast cancer in this country is among the highest in the world.
Our government's attention and money are targeted at diagnosis and treatments, which are absolutely necessary to save
women's lives. But it makes extremely good sense to work on the vital area of reducing the incidence as well. This is
not happening, so Breast Cancer Network is challenging the Government to take on the task. A prevention strategy is a
long-term strategy that will have greatest impact on our daughters and granddaughters, rather than women of today. For
their sake, we must get support for prevention.
Breast Cancer Network NZ has launched a petition asking government for a breast cancer strategy focused on reducing the
incidence of breast cancer in New Zealand. Additionally, it asks that the role of synthetic environmental chemicals in
breast cancer is acknowledged, and that New Zealand women are tested to establish the level of residues carried in their
bodies. Finally, it requests that a precautionary approach be adopted with all chemicals where there is evidence of a
link with breast cancer
In the recent history of breast cancer, great progress has been possible when people have worked together for change.
Breast Cancer Network NZ is inviting the public to help by signing the petition. There is a short turn-around time with
signed petition forms to be returned in September. Forms can be obtained via brcanz@xtra.co.nz, by phoning us at (09)
