Wanakafest to attempt to set world’s longest bra chain for breast cancer research
A nationwide campaign to raise funds for breast cancer research was launched today with a bid to set a record for the world’s longest bra chain.
The Guinness Book of Records attempt for the longest bra chain will be measured during Wanakafest in September.
Festival organiser Kerry Quin said today proceeds from the campaign would be donated to New Zealand’s Breast Cancer Research Trust.
``We need to collect 115,000 bras and hope to raise a large sum for the trust,’’ she said.
The current Guinness World Record was set on April 30 in Cyprus this year with a total of 114, 782 bras.
The Wanaka event will mark the end of the Cardrona Bra Fence, Quin said.
Auckland-based strapless bra-maker Abracadabra has backed the world record attempt and is donating a part of every sale of stick-on bras to the trust.
``We are right behind this campaign and fully support the festival and the breast cancer research trust,’’ Abracadabra director Vivian Zhong said today.
The campaign aims to get women from all over the country to send in their old bras with a gold coin donation. Abracadabra will donate 15 percent of their sales to the campaign if women post in their old bras.
Wanakafest will collect bras from a range of celebrities and auction them off.
``We will invite artists to participate in
a live art competition followed by an auction of the artwork with the proceeds going toward the Breast Cancer Research Trust,’’ Quin said.
``Companies will be asked to make donations along the way in our quest to collect 115,000 bras.
``We are thrilled Abracadabra will be accepting old second hand strapped bras and replacing them with new stick on strapless bras and giving money to the trust.
The chain of bras at the festival will be hung on a giant temporary maze constructed from security fencing on Wanaka’s main street on September 16 and 17.
