Power cuts - refrigerator, water warning

Published: Mon 12 Jun 2006 04:31 PM
Statement from Auckland Regional Public Health Service
If your house has not had power for six hours or longer some perishable food may be affected due to increasing temperature in your refrigerator.
The Auckland Regional Public Health Service advises that people should consume perishable foods as soon as possible. Cook all foods thoroughly. If in doubt, dispose of food in the rubbish. Wrap it well before you do this. The current duration of the power outage in Auckland should not have affected the food in your freezer.
Hand hygiene is always important but even more so in these situations where some have been asked to conserve waste water. You should wash your hands for 20 seconds using soap and warm water and then dry them thoroughly for 20 seconds. Hand sanitizers are an acceptable alternative to hand washing in situations where water is limited or unavailable. Although water conservation is important in these situations, hand hygiene is essential to avoid food-borne illnesses.
