Medical Regulation: Global Issues – Shared Solutions – November 2006
The International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA) is holding its 7th International Conference on Medical Regulation in Wellington in November 2006.
The four day conference, with the theme Medical Regulation: Global Issues – Shared Solutions is being hosted by the Medical Council of New Zealand between the 11th and 14th of November.
The conference is expected to attract about 450 international and New Zealand delegates.
Ms Sue Ineson, a member of the IAMRA management committee who is assisting organise the IAMRA conference, says the conference will provide an opportunity for regulators to learn from each other.
“Today the issues affecting medical regulators are global rather than national, particularly with the migration of doctors.
“For instance, there is an increasing view that the trend to draw doctors from less developed countries is unethical. The question then arises how you prevent this without restricting an individual’s right to travel.”
Ms Ineson says suggested solutions in the past have included increasing training opportunities within developed countries, increasing bilateral programmes, stopping visa waiver programmes and enhancing opportunities in doctors’ home countries.
Other topics for discussion at the conference include: International trends, movement of doctors, global and emerging threats; Educating doctors for 2010 – how should they be trained, assessed, work and maintain lifelong learning; and The A, B, C of regulating doctors.
Representing 74 members in over 31 countries, IAMRA works to support medical regulatory authorities in protecting the public interest by promoting high standards for physician education, licensure and regulation, and facilitating the ongoing exchange of information among medical regulatory authorities.
