Statement From The Parents Of Mark Hateley
Prepared statement from Russell and Shirley Hateley, parents of Mark Hateley
“On behalf of Mark, we would like to express our sincere thanks to those who have made contact with us about our son and expressed concern for his condition since his fall on 20 January 2006.
Our main focus at this time is to concentrate on Mark’s wellbeing but it is really important for people to know that we are extremely grateful for Mark’s miraculous rescue and can not thank enough everyone who was and is involved with his care.
Many people, some of whom we do not know, have offered help and support such as accommodation, a vehicle and many other items. We are just so overwhelmed by it all.
We have received a number of enquiries about Mark’s health and Mark has had many visits from his climbing companions, who were with him at the time of his accident as they descended Mt Cook.
They abseiled down to where Mark had fallen, gave first aid and initiated the rescue. He has been visited by other climbers he has met in New Zealand and good friends from the Brisbane climbing community also holidaying in the South Island.
The University of Queensland Rock Climbing Club is keeping a close eye on Mark’s progress from Australia. We want everyone to know in Australia that we are grateful for their prayers, thoughts and best wishes. We are deeply appreciative of all the support that we have received.
Mark is currently in Christchurch Hospital in a comfortable condition. He has progressed well and is now no longer requiring mechanical ventilation. While his injuries are no longer life threatening it will take some weeks for him to fully recover.
We would request that media do not make contact with us, as we prepare to work with Mark on his continued healing and rehabilitation.“
