Westpac Rescue Helicopter Transports Two People From Fatal Crash
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue helicopter transported two seriously injured from a fatal car crash near Upper Hutt this evening.
The helicopter was called to a two car crash at SH2, just north of Moonshine, at around 6pm this evening.
As we understand it the crash was a high speed head-on collision between two vehicles.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was used to transport the two critically injured persons, both with multiple injuries, to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department. The patients were treated in the helicopter by two Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics and they arrived in the emergency department shortly after 7pm. They are currently being assessed and treated by hospital staff.
"By the time the helicopter arrived the rescue efforts were well underway with ambulance, police and fire crews present" says helicopter crew Ruth Zeinert. "However it was still a horrific scene and one that even experience never quite prepares you for."
At this stage one of the victims remains unidentified, the other is a 16 year old male, possibly from Auckland. We understand that two people died at the scene and one other patient was transported by road ambulance.
