District Health Boards Report Small Surplus
The combined operating surplus of New Zealand's 21 district health boards (DHBs) was $1.0 million for the June 2005
quarter, Statistics New Zealand said today. A surplus of $29.3 million was recorded in the March 2005 quarter, while the
surplus in the June 2004 quarter was $9.1 million. For the year ended 30 June 2005 there was a combined deficit of $15.2
million.
Total DHB expenditure rose by $140.4 million (6.8 percent) to $2,207.3 million between the March 2005 and June 2005
quarters. For the year ended 30 June 2005, the rise was $832.9 million (up 11 percent) compared with the previous year.
The two major components of expenditure for the June 2005 quarter are the direct provision of public hospital and health
services (HHS), at $1,317.0 million, and the purchase of medical services from non-government providers and inter-DHB
services, at $861.7 million. The total operating expenses of the HHS providers were 10.0 percent higher than in the
March 2005 quarter, but 10.5 percent higher when compared with the June 2004 quarter. Employee costs, the key expense
item, were up 8.8 percent (to $810.1 million) compared with the March 2005 quarter. This quarterly rise in employee
costs was matched by a similar-sized rise in the rest of operating expenses.
Total DHB revenue rose by $112.0 million (5.3 percent) to $2,208.3 million from the March 2005 quarter to the June 2005
quarter. The major component of revenue, funding from the Ministry of Health, increased by $125.0 million to $1,862.5
million. For the year ended 30 June 2005, total DHB revenue rose by $866.2 million (11.6 percent) compared with the
previous year.
