Industry gathers for health IT event of the year
'HINZ Conference & Exhibition 2-5 August 2005 at Sky City, Auckland - telling the New Zealand Story' will be this year's premier platform
for the health IT industry in New Zealand, says organiser Linda McKay.
The HINZ 2005 conferenceÊ will showcase NZ health informatics expertise and successes, providing a window to health
informatics worldwide. Major conference supporters include:Ê the Ministry of Health, New Zealand Health IT Cluster, NZ
HL7 Standards Group and the District Health Board Chief Information Officer forum.
HINZ 2005 caters for the a broad audience in New Zealand. Key stakeholder includes the healthcare industry, health
informatics community, commercial vendors, tertiary educational institutes, public health providers such as the DHBs and
the Ministry of Health. HINZ 2005 offers a timely, neutral forum to share visions, knowledge and experiences of health
information technologies, a genuine opportunity for networking and opportunity creation at a regional, national and
international level.
New Zealand is a world leader in technology innovation, says Dr Stephen Chu, chair of the Scientific Programme
Committee, and has established a distinctive global niche in health information technology: for example in the creation
of unique patient identifiers, web-based clinical information systems and Clinical Context Object Workgroup integration
technology (CCOW), vendor independent standards that allow clinical applications to share information at the point of
care. New Zealand is at the leading edge of the HL7 implementation, research and development, he says.
In addition, says Chu, New Zealand leads the world with initiatives in development such as the health provider index.
These successes are often better known to our international colleagues than among New Zealanders, he says.
HINZ has therefore dedicated the 2005 national health informatics conference to the sharing of innovation ideas and
experiences under a theme of 'Telling the New Zealand Story'.
HINZ attendees will hear Government initiatives and actions plans: for example, initiatives in the area of using health
information to address inequalities in health outcomes and locally relevant applications of the international HL7
standards.
Conference attendees will gain insight from both NZ and international experts on Health Informatic successes locally and
abroad, in addition to hands-on demonstrations of working health IT systems.
