In nurses and mums we place our trust
The annual Reader’s Digest survey on trust has confirmed it, nurses and mothers are highly trusted professions, according to Plunket’s New Zealand President, Kaye Crowther.
Nurses were placed third and mothers fourth, with fire fighters ranked first most trusted profession and ambulance offices ranked second. Mothers and fathers were new professions added to the survey; fathers took 12th place in the survey of 30 professions.
“We were thrilled to see mothers and fathers recognised as professions and included in the survey. Parenting is one of the most difficult professions and it is satisfying to see that it is not a thankless profession.
“That New Zealanders trust their mums and dads to this extent, is a real boost for parenting. We know that parenting has its highs and lows with some parents thriving on the challenge and others finding the role more difficult.
“It won’t come as a surprise to new mums that nurses are the country’s third most trusted profession - the value they placed on their Plunket nurses came through loud and clear in a recent Plunket customer satisfaction survey. Mums and dads warmly praised Plunket care delivery staff calling them ‘lovely’, ‘helpful’ and ‘supportive’. There were so many appreciative comments around their professionalism and friendliness,” said Mrs Crowther.
Plunket is one of the largest employers of nurses, with 650 Plunket nurses, Kaiawhina and Community Karitane caring for 92 percent of the 52,000 newborns each year. Plunket nurses hold specialist well child health qualifications.
