Minister Approves $21.5m For Burwood Redevelopment

The Minister of Health Hon Annette King has approved the second stage of Burwood Hospital’s redevelopment at a total cost of $21.5m.

Making the announcement, the Canterbury District Health Board’s Chairman, Syd Bradley, said he was pleased with the decision of the Minister to support the Board’s capital proposal that will bring many benefits to our community.

‘This project is part of the CDHB’s asset management plan which scored in the highest group of DHB Capital Investment plans. It will enable the Board to proceed with the second stage of the hospital’s development,’ he said.

The redevelopment addressed the shortcomings of the existing outdated operating theatres, wards, outpatient and associated facilities. The key components of the redevelopment are: a new operating suite of four theatres a recovery area including an eight bed post-anaesthetic care unit post-operative orthopaedic ward facility enhancement of orthopaedic outpatients development of associated service areas eg day of surgery admission and day surgery reception and preparation areas.

Mr Bradley said the key benefits of the redevelopment would be improved patient care with modern facilities and improved inpatient flow, increased orthopaedic operations and improved productivity.

The Stage 2 redevelopment of Burwood Hospital was part of a three-stage process to renew ageing facilities at Burwood and to redevelop the hospital campus as a significant secondary hospital for the greater Canterbury community.
