Heart failure study among major new HRC grants
Four major new research programmes were amongst 75 health research contracts worth more than $62 million announced by the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC) today.
A multidisciplinary research programme, led by University of Auckland’s Professor Mark Cannell, aims to clarify aspects of why some hearts fail and how life threatening arrhythmias may be initiated. Top diabetes researcher Professor Garth Cooper will be a major contributor to the programme that will focus on two major heart failure risk factors – diabetes and ischemia/reperfusion (free-radical induced damage) and will use a variety of imaging techniques, proteomics, biophysics and modeling.
The polypill trial is one a number of innovative interventions tackling major risks to health that make up a collaborative research programme led by Dr Anthony Rodgers at the University of Auckland’s Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU). Four other projects in this programme focus on smoking prevention and cessation and will include a community-based study involving families that is aimed at reducing the uptake of smoking among children.
A programme led by Professor Richard Faull from the University of Auckland will study the patterns and mechanisms of nerve cell death, repair and neurogenisis in Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.
A University of Otago Wellington School of Medicine programme led by Professor Tony Blakely will bring together social epidemiology, Maori health, health services and sociology to find interventions to address health inequalities in New Zealand.
Dr Bruce Scoggins, HRC Chief Executive, says the funding increase announced by the Government earlier this month has enabled the HRC to support a greater number of high quality research projects this year.
“Our researchers are amongst the best in the world and I’m delighted that this year we have been able to fund more top class research than in previous years,” he says.

Annual funding round results
The HRC received 250 applications in its annual project round and awarded a total of 75 contracts, including two contracts that are to be confirmed. These were chosen in a two-step process involving local and overseas expert referees who work in the same research area, and intense scrutiny by specialised assessing committees. The total value of new contracts was $62.34 million (excluding GST).
