Guides And Blood Service Have Treat For Donors
Blood Donors around the country will receive a pleasant surprise this week when donating blood, for they will have the
opportunity to enjoy the iconic Girl Guides Biscuit with their post donation cup of tea.
NZBS Staff Member explaining how the donated blood gets separated into three main components – red cells, plasma and
platelets.
Guides New Zealand and the New Zealand Blood Service have joined forces to offer the treat to all donors who visit any
one of the 11 Donor Centres that the service has nationwide. NZBS are expecting over 3100 people this week to generously
donate blood for the benefit of other people in the community.
In New Zealand 30% of blood is used for accidents and emergencies, Cardiothoracic use is 15%, general surgery including
orthopaedics uses 16%, another 16% in general medicine, 6% in obstetrics and gynaecology and the remainder fro other
clinical uses.

the community” says NZBS Marketing Manager Paul Hayes. “Making a blood donation is one of the best ways a person can
contribute to the community; it only takes about an hour of your time and because blood can be spilt into its
constituent parts each donation can help save up to three lives”.
