Community Asked to Have Their Say on SDHB's Maternity Strategic Plan
Southland District Health Board is seeking community feedback to its maternity services strategic plan.
The document, prepared by maternity researcher Dr Christine Hendry, was developed as a result of SDHB's 2003/04 District
Annual Plan which signalled a need to review the maternity facilities and services in Southland with consideration to
birthing patterns, birthing numbers and the shortage of rural maternity workforce.
"We wanted to develop a longer-term strategic plan which would improve access for women to a quality maternity service
and improve health outcomes for mothers and babies in the SDHB region," said Christine Miller, Acting General Manager
Planning and Funding.
The development of the strategic plan involved a stocktake of the existing maternity facilities, services and workforce;
identification of an appropriate service configuration for the region; and consultation with key stakeholders. As a
result, 5 goals aimed at improved health outcomes for mothers and babies were identified and 17 initiatives developed to
be implemented over the next 5-10 years.
"The aim of the strategy is to ensure the provision of a sustainable and clinically appropriate model of maternity
services in Southland that meets community needs," Ms Miller said.
"We are keen to hear from the community their thoughts about the issues and options that have been highlighted in the
maternity services strategic plan discussion document."
