Get moving New Zealand
Exercise can be your Christmas gift to yourself this year, says the New Zealand Medical Association.
While it’s great to enjoy the eating and drinking that goes with the Christmas festivities (in moderation, of course), make physical activity part of your Christmas tradition as well, says NZMA Chairman Dr Tricia Briscoe.
“There are endless ways to increase exercise levels, and walking in particular is very easy, and can be a very social activity. New Zealand is a beautiful country, so make the most of our wonderful bush and beaches and other scenic places to go walking.
“The benefits of exercise are well documented, and done regularly it can lead to major health improvements, including lower blood pressure, reduced depression, less heart attacks, better blood sugar control, and weight loss. Exercise has even been shown to reduce your risk of bowel and breast cancer.
“The Christmas holiday break is a great time to get started, away from the pressures of work. You could even make it your New Year’s resolution - and this is certainly a resolution worth keeping.”
