Hui will celebrate Takataapui identities and discuss National Strategic Plan to campaign against the spread of HIV
Maori who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender will gather in Auckland in early December to celebrate their identity and history at the Hui Takataapui A Motu 2004.
This year's conference is being held at Waipapa Marae, Auckland University, from the December 3 to 5 and is open to all Takataapui Maori, whether or not they work in Maori or non-Maori organisations that have a sexual and reproductive health kaupapa.
“The aim of the conference,” says Te Herekiekie Herewini, Manager/Tumuwhakahaere of Health Promotion for the New Zealand AIDS Foundation Te Tuuaapapa Mate Aaraikore O Aotearoa, “is not only to reflect on the history of Takataapui to our present stance, and celebrate our Takataapui identity, but to participate in a National Strategic Plan to campaign against the spread of HIV/AIDS in our community.
The hui will also feature national and international guests who will participate as speakers and contributors including Dr Clive Aspin (Ngati Maru ki Hauraki) a senior researcher and academic in gay and takataapui issues; Georgina Beyer (Te Ati Awa, Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Raukawa me Ngati Porou) Member of Parliament and a number of speakers from Australian indigenous health promotion and transgender health promotion programmes.
