Drug Foundation backs drinking age review
The New Zealand Drug Foundation today welcomed calls by Progressive MP Matt Robson for parliament to review the minimum
purchase age for alcohol.
“The rise of alcohol-related problems and binge drinking among young people in New Zealand has shown a clear need to
reconsider returning the age limit back to 20 years-old,” said Drug Foundation Executive Director Ross Bell.
“The international evidence supports raising the drinking age as an effective way to tackle problems associated with
alcohol. The United States, for example, returned their drinking age to 21 years and experienced a reversal of social
and health problems that had increased when a lower drinking age was imposed."
“It is important that politicians consider the evidence carefully and make the right decision in the interests of the
New Zealand public’s health and safety – especially our young people,” he said.
