Workforce development Scholarships
The hard slog of University will be a little easier next year for seven Maori students who have been awarded the Pegasus Health Maori Workforce development Scholarships for the coming year.
This years winners are:
- Dougal Thorban (Waikato), Duncan Wilson (Ngai Tahu), Monique Scott (Kahungungu o Wairarapa), Joshua Howe (Ngati Awa) who are all studying medicine.
- Renee Noble (Waikato) and Nina Baker (Nga Puhi) who are studying Nursing.
- Tracey Haitana (Ngati Tuwharetoa) is studying a Masters in Education and Psychology at Canterbury University.
The scholarships were initiated by Pegasus Health in 2002 and since then have supported eleven Maori students while they study their key areas of interest in either medicine, nursing or another allied health pursuit. Each of the former recipients has gone on to contribute to the health of the wider community.
“Improving Maori health by supporting the development of the Maori health workforce is a top priority for Pegasus Health” says Pegasus Health Chair, Dr Sandra Hicks.
These scholarships contribute to the development of the Maori Primary Healthcare workforce within Canterbury which we consider is a critical addition to the strategy to improve the healthcare status of Maori within our community,”
This year recipients will have two years fees paid with mentoring in tikanga (protocol) and Te reo Maori (Maori language).
Ends
A celebration with the students will be held on Wednesday 4th of August at:
