Nursing & Midwifery Awards Announced
This week, as part of International Nurses Day, the CDHB launched its latest initiative to recognise the contribution of
nursing and midwifery staff throughout the District Health Board.
Making the announcement, the CDHB’s Executive Director of Nursing, Mary Gordon said the awards would be initiated later
in the year.
‘We are establishing three categories to recognise nurses and midwives. For the category ‘Making a Difference’ there
will be two recipients within the Hospitals & Specialist Service, one for a registered nurse and one for an enrolled nurse. The midwifery awards within the Hospitals & Specialist Service will be across the Women’s Health Division and Ashburton & Rural Division. A number of awards for nursing and midwife practitioners will be dedicated to the primary health care
setting.’
Ms Gordon said the awards would be recognised with a monetary component and a certificate of excellence. The ‘Making a
Difference’ award would be valued between $100-150, the preceptor award (helping other nurses undertake postgraduate
study and students undertaking training) would also be valued between $100-150 and the Excellence in Practice awards
would be valued at $1000.
Individuals would be nominated by nurses and midwives with supporting rationale for the awards and the final selection
would be undertaken by a judging panel appointed by the Directors of Nursing within Canterbury.
‘In previous years, we have provided scholarships to new graduate nurses however, on reviewing this initiative, we felt
it was time to recognise the contribution made to patients by experienced nurses and midwives and to celebrate
excellence in nursing and midwifery practice,’ she said.
