Statement from Roche Products (New Zealand) Ltd
Concerns from New Zealand doctors regarding Xenical reclassification are unfounded
Auckland, 29th April 2004 – Xenical remains a prescription only medicine in New Zealand, however an application has been made to the Medicines Classification Committee (MCC) seeking reclassification of Xenical from a prescription medicine to a pharmacist-only-medicine. The MCC will review the application at its next meeting in May 2004.
Pharmacist-only-medicines are available under the professional care of pharmacists, ‘behind the counter’ rather than on the ‘open’ shelves. Pharmacists are fully trained and qualified health professionals who regularly offer guidance and advice on a range of health issues ensuring that medicines are used responsibly and appropriately.
