Joint Effort with Stan Matthews
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Stan Matthews is urging people that have had a joint replacement to take part in The Joint Effort Walk next month.
Designed to encourage people who have had joint replacements to raise money for research into joint replacement, the nationwide programme of sponsored walks is organised by the Wishbone Trust.
Last year the Trust raised $250,000 towards orthopaedic research.
"We probably got a couple of hundred people walking last time the event was held and we raised $5500 in this district alone," Dr Matthews said.
Gisborne's one-kilometre walk will encompass the city centre's three bridges and will depart from the Marina Restaurant on Sunday 4 April at 1pm.
Dr Matthews is one of four orthopaedic surgeons who perform around 70 hip and knee replacement operations in Gisborne each year.
Dr Matthews is urging anyone who has had a joint replacement, or anyone interested in improving the lifestyle of friends and family who suffer joint problems, to take part.
"We need people to pick up the sponsorship forms, get as much sponsorship as they can, and then come along to the walk."
For more information or for sponsorship forms contact Dr Matthews or his staff at the Mangapapa Medical Centre, 225 Ormond Road, or on (06) 868 8668.
