Medical Staffing At Ashburton Hospital
Medical Staffing At Ashburton Hospital
The Canterbury District Health Board is supporting a recommendation from its Chief Medical Officer, Dr Nigel Millar, to review the existing public health services at Ashburton hospital.
At the CDHB’s Hospital Advisory Committee meeting this morning, Dr Millar said there were difficulties in maintaining appropriate medical staffing levels at Ashburton hospital, specifically house surgeons and Senior Medical Officers.
Dr Millar suggested a review should be undertaken which could look at a better model of care of public health services for the community.
The General Manager of Hospital & Specialist Services, Jock Muir said the first priority was to the people of Ashburton and the surrounding district.
‘It is important they continue to get good quality public health services. This means we will need to explore different models of care and in order to achieve this we must first review what is in place at present.’
‘Having sustainable public health services in Ashburton is most important. Anything we do will fully involve local GPs, members of the Ashburton PHO and other interested parties.’
The Hospital Advisory Committee noted the report and supported the proposal to review the situation as soon as possible.
