Online journal will showcase New Zealand's innovative use of health informatics to a worldwide audience.
Health Care and Informatics Review Online, which is being launched in December, will provide a window to the world on
how informatics is being used to improve healthcare in this country.
Building on a successful online capability that was commenced in 1996, Health Care and Informatics Review Online will
develop a widely accessible resource of experience in our health industry.
Supported by an editorial board comprising of key leaders in clinical informatics, Enigma Publishing is being funded by
the Ministry of Health to produce the quarterly journal.
"Information management and information technology play a crucial role in assisting clinicians to deliver high quality,
equitable health care, to people in all regions", says Health Minister Annette King.
"The National Health Index, a unique identifier given to each person using health and disability support services in New
Zealand, is a fine example of our leadership in this area."
The Ministry recognises the role that the journal can play to promote the sharing of experience, the dissemination of
information and the advancement of discussion in the important area of clinical informatics.
Judging from past experience, the journal is expected to achieve over 50,000 hits a month, with around 60 percent from
overseas.
Peter Davis, Professor of Public Health, Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Sciences at University of Otago, who
is on the editorial board says "Rather than compete with existing research journals, Health Care and Informatics Review
Online focuses on review articles that communicate and share learning experiences from the use of clinical informatics
in the real world."
The journal will carry submitted and commissioned material, including review articles, short reports and correspondence.
The occasional subsection "Experience in Practice" provides a template-based format for short papers, capturing the
process of application of clinical informatics and lessons learned from that.
