Leaders of General Practice applaud solution to fees problem
The leaders of General practice are very pleased that a solution has been found for the issue of General Practice fees.
‘This is an important move forward for the patients of New Zealand and confirms the Government’s acknowledgement of the
essential need for a strong General Practice to provide for the health of our communities,’ they say.
‘The Government has the assurances it needs, to know that increased subsidies for primary care in New Zealand will
result in cheaper visits to the doctor for our patients.’
The agreed fees policy confirm that General Practice has retained the right to set fees that are fair and sustainable.
Where there are concerns about fee levels, there is a process by which District Health Boards and Primary Health
Organisations can work together to ensure an outcome that is fair to everyone.
The fees policy was developed in a process that included the Minister of Health, the Ministry of Health, the Independent
Practitioners’ Association Council, the New Zealand Medical Association, the Royal New Zealand College of GPs, CareNet
and FirstHealth.
